Experience a unique and accessible nature journey with this varied 9.5 km route around the lake, to the top of the terril, and across the spectacular floating bridge “Fietsen tussen de Mijnterril”.
This route has been specially designed for users of a (personal) wheelchair traction device such as the Swiss-Trac, combining comfort with adventure. The path first leads you along the peaceful lake, where water, reed beds, and open landscapes provide a relaxing start to the walk.
The route then continues towards the impressive terril, where an adapted and manageable climb gradually brings you to the summit. Along the way, you experience the region’s unique mining heritage coming to life, while the landscape becomes increasingly wild and panoramic.
One of the highlights is crossing the floating bridge “Fietsen tussen de Mijnterril”, a unique experience where you literally move between water and terrils, experiencing the landscape from a completely different perspective.
At the top of the terril, you are rewarded with sweeping views over the Maasland region and its surroundings, including the Hoge Kempen National Park and the surrounding spoil heaps as a striking backdrop.
This 9.5 km route offers a perfect mix of accessibility, nature immersion, and adventure, showing that even a challenging environment can be accessible to everyone. Ideal for those who want to enjoy an active and unforgettable outing independently or together with family and friends.
