Maasmechelen is gaining a remarkable new artwork: Reflection by Dutch artist Germaine Kruip. This monumental sound sculpture forms a poetic tribute to the historic ferries across the River Meuse and will be unveiled on Sunday, March 22. With the announcement of Jennifer Tee as the final artist, the Kunst aan de Maas lineup is now complete.
In the Maaswinkel nature reserve in Maasmechelen, cowboys and cowgirls play a surprising but crucial role. Eight local volunteers help keep the area safe for both people and animals, supporting the unique rewilding project taking place here.

The blue and green walking routes will not be accessible in 2026. The Agency for Nature and Forest (Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos) is launching the largest Blue Deal project in Flanders at the Kikbeekbron in Maasmechelen. The aim is to restore the ecosystem of the original Kikbeek Valley. This will allow more water to be retained in the area. More info.
However, the off-leash dog areas, the cycling route network and the National Park Trail in the surrounding area remain accessible.

Maasmechelen geeft vandaag de aftrap van de nieuwe brandingcampagne. Met een promotiespot en aantrekkelijke visuals die via verschillende media worden ingezet, zet het bestuur consequent de positionering als ‘natuuroplaadpunt van de Euregio’ voort.
1,5 miljoen Europese subsidies voor uitbouw van RivierPark Maasvallei en GrensPark Kempen~Broek. De Limburgse grensstreek valt tussen Maastricht en Weert voor ettelijke kilometers samen met het grensoverschrijdende RivierPark Maasvallei en het GrensPark Kempen~Broek. Dat zijn twee verschillende, maar natuurrijke landschappen die kort bij mekaar liggen. Er wordt intens samengewerkt rond landschapskwaliteit en -beleving, over de grenzen heen. Samen met 13 partners die actief zijn in het RivierPark Maasvallei en het GrensPark Kempen~broek, diende het Regionaal Landschap Kempen en Maasland vorig jaar een interreg-aanvraag in. De aanvraag werd deze week nu ook daadwerkelijk goedgekeurd, waardoor er de komende drie jaar zo’n 3 miljoen euro beschikbaar komt voor verschillende projecten op het terrein. De ene helft, zo’n 1,5 miljoen euro, komt van Europa via het programma Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland, de andere helft wordt door de partners ingebracht.
