In Maasmechelen, adventure goes hand in hand with sporty activities!

Looking for fun and energetic experiences during a weekend away? Then stick around and read this blog, we’ll share our top tips for an active and unforgettable weekend in Maasmechelen.

A good start is half the battle.

Kick off your weekend with a walk through the Mechelse Heide and immerse yourself in stunning natural surroundings. Opt for the purple trail? Then you're choosing an award-winning 12.6 km route, officially recognised as a Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe. With good reason! Once you lace up your hiking boots, a varied path awaits: from open heathlands to narrow forest tracks in the Mechelse Bos. Feeling thirsty? No worries – the route passes by Fietscafé De Statie and ’t Salamanderke.

Visiting Maasmechelen without seeing the river Maas is like fries without sauce.

Explore the Maas Valley and its green plains on foot, by bike or E-scooter. Want a truly unique perspective? Hop in a kayak and float between Maas boulders and rapids, while spotting galloway cattle or konik horses along the riverbanks. A water adventure you won’t forget anytime soon.

Had enough action for the day?

Treat yourself to a relaxing evening at Elaisa Energetic Wellness. You’ve earned it! You'll feel like you’re on another continent. Various pools and saunas bring total peace. Just imagine: after a wonderful day, you're now relaxing in a sauna with a view over the lake, the twin slag heaps on the horizon. Tempting enough to book another day, right?

Up early? Good call!

Go for a morning run at Terhills and you might spot wild deer! The green trail leads you straight to a panoramic viewpoint. The same view you enjoyed from the sauna yesterday — now experienced from the top of the Lange Terril. Take a break, soak in the scenery, then continue your trail back down.

How do you link all these wonderful areas together?

By bike, of course!

Easily map out your ideal route via the cycling junction network. Explore the cycle paths of the Hoge Kempen National Park and cross into the Rivierpark Maasvallei. Ride on the water across the floating bridge Cycling between the Terrils (junctions 502 – 565), or enjoy endless views over the heathlands (junctions 550 – 551).

No bike? No problem! Maasmechelen has several bike rental points, including the National Park Visitor Center, Cycle Center Terhills Resort and Diagenhof Fietsverhuur.

See you soon!
