Put on your hiking boots for the Top Trail of Mechelse Heide: a challenging yet unforgettable 12.5-kilometre hike through one of Limburg’s most beautiful natural areas. The purple loop takes you across vast heathlands, peaceful pine forests and rolling unpaved trails that constantly reveal breathtaking new views. In August and September, the heath is at its most spectacular, when the landscape turns purple and offers stunning panoramic scenery as far as the eye can see.
Along the way, you will also pass the old Eisden railway station, the historic final stop of the former coal railway where the last coal train departed in 1987. This route perfectly combines pure nature with a touch of Limburg’s mining history. With its hilly terrain, stairways and unpaved paths, this loop is ideal for active hikers who enjoy both challenge and beauty. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended.
