The summer months are slowly coming to an end. In fact, autumn has already shown us some of its finest moments. But here in Maasmechelen, we like to hold on to summer just a little longer. Because the spirit of late summer is rooted in this place. In this blog, we are happy to share a few great tips to enjoy the last summer days!

Watching Migratory Birds

Countless birds migrate during the autumn passage. Some leave after spending the summer here, while others arrive from the far north, trading the Scandinavian winter for our milder months.

One of the many places where you can marvel at this phenomenon is the Natuurpunt-managed area Maesbempder Greend. Various birds prepare here for long journeys or use the area as a “pit stop.” But you’ll also find stunning permanent residents such as herons and occasionally kingfishers. Some wild grazers, including a family of Konik horses and Galloway cattle, also call Maesbempder Greend home. Remember: enjoying wildlife is always best from a distance, without disturbing their habitat.

Indian Summer Days

This is an event you definitely don’t want to miss. Together with Hoge Kempen National Park, Visit Maasmechelen organizes a variety of fun activities under the banner Indian Summer Days.

How about a Mushroom Walk? Or have you ever wondered what lies behind that large mirrored wall at Terhills? Sign up for one or more activities and enjoy our beautiful nature while an experienced guide shares 101 fascinating facts with enthusiasm. Curious about activities? Be sure to check the schedule!

Golden Hour

Are you also a fan of the golden hour? You know, that magical moment just after sunrise or sunset, when the sky turns orange and purple. These are your months! In September and October, the horizon becomes a fairytale backdrop.

Did you know that the Groene Wandellus at Terhills – Hoge Kempen National Park – leads directly to the panoramic viewpoint? This makes it easy for you to enjoy the golden hour at one of the most beautiful spots in our region.

Enjoying a Terrace, Sunglasses and a Warm Jacket

The combination of a warm sweater, a windbreaker, and sunglasses just screams late summer vibes! Dress warmly and enjoy one last time on a cozy terrace. Coffee or a refreshing drink? The choice is yours.

On our website, you’ll find plenty of charming restaurants, brasseries, and cafés where you can claim that last sunny spot. Cheers!

Refreshing Walks Along the Maas

Keep that sweater and windbreaker handy, because it’s time to head out for some fresh air along the Maas. This past summer, the river was unusually low, but the water level has now risen. You’ll notice the strength of the rapids.

No worries, though. Just enjoy this majestic river flowing through vast fields. Our tip? Get lost in the stunning landscape park at Leut Castle, the perfect end to a late summer day.

MaasMaanvuur

The grand fire spectacle returns to Maasmechelen! On October 25 & 26, international acrobats will transform the castle park of Leut into a magical open-air circus. Think the end of summer will be cold? MaasMaanvuur proves otherwise!
