The church of Uikhoven is the first church in Maasmechelen to gain an new purpose. The main part of the church is reserved for church services, while the other section has been converted into a museum of local history (Heemkundig Museum). The whole was rebaptised the ‘KijkKerk’ (Looking Church) on 22 June 2018.
The ‘KijkKerk’ is a museum which displays the religious treasures of Uikhoven, and which recreates the local Procession of the Sacraments. You can admire several paintings by Lou Asperslagh, including the Coronation of Maria, the Way of the Cross and the Baptismal Font. And the Saints have a story to tell too!
The exhibition highlights a number of local themes, such as herbal doctor ‘Pastor Goossens’ and the perils of the River Maas. The Meander of the Maas (Maasmeander) shows the magnificent shores of Uikhoven and Geul. Indeed, a real fishing boat gleams on the water (mirror), and an artificial church wall allows us to picture the size of the former church built in 1857. This exhibition is complemented by an array of temporary exhibitions. In other words: too much to mention, and certainly worth a visit!
KijkKerk can grant permission for subsidiary activities which are deemed appropriate in the context of the church (including temporary exhibitions, concerts, book presentations, lectures, etc.).
