Kruinenpad
Depart from the Zuid-Willemsvaart dike for a unique, high-level experience, literally. The Kruinenpad runs between the treetops and is 181 metres long. Those who want to enjoy it for a bit longer than 181 metres can stop at the picnic bench located here. Of course, you won’t be the only one stopping here. Please show your solidarity by moving on when your picnic is over and do not leave any rubbish behind for the next visitors.
Maas Cross
Up until the 19th century, the ships on the Maas were pulled by horses walking on the towpaths. At this point, the ships had to change channels, forcing the horses and their riders to the towpath on the other bank. This crossing was not without danger. People tried to buy a safe passage by putting money in an offertory box on a cross. Fortunately, you don’t need to sacrifice any money in order to feast on a delicious lunch in this place so rich in history.
Uikhoven with view of the Maas
There are many beautiful spots along the Maas where you can stop and enjoy the view and a picnic. If you forgot a picnic blanket and don’t feel like sitting in the grass, you can continue pedalling or hiking on to a beautiful part of the Maas in Uikhoven. There is a picnic bench here with a wide view of the Maas. Nobody’s going to turn down a romantic picnic by the water…
Hanging gardens
A mine tunnel regularly collapsed in the course of coal mining. This caused major soil sinkage, which has left its mark on Eisden Village. You can see the sinkage really well at the Hanging Gardens (Hangende Tuinen), a green oasis at bicycle junction 55 on the Zuidwillemsvaart dike. Here, you can see the canal on one side and Eisden Village, which is dozens of metres lower, on the other. It is a unique geographical feature that is well worth a visit.
