During the summer, a number of temporary artworks will be coming to the Maas Valley. One of them is ‘In Lieu of What Was’ by Alia Farid. The artwork comprises five large sculptures of water containers, which highlight the increasing scarcity of water.
While other areas have ground-water and drinking-water shortages, in the central section of the Maas Vally, ground water must be pumped up 24/7 to keep the mine subsidence area dry. This is then used as a source of drinking water for many citizens of Limburg. The complex and sometimes conflicting challenges of water management are very visible in the area of ‘t Greven, where past land subsidence made it possible to walk through the treetops.
Due to the size of the installation, it can be seen from either side of the Zuid-Willemsvaart. An information sign with relevant explanation is located on each side.
