Walking

The Mechelse Heide is not only diverse in its landscapes; its walking routes offer something for everyone. Choose from circular walks ranging from 3.1 to 12.6 km. If you opt for the longest route, you will be walking along a European award-winning TOP TRAIL.

Just behind the gateway, you will find the Sandglass Trail (1.5 km), an accessible route with a paved surface that offers a beautiful introduction to the unique landscape of the Mechelse Heide.

The Mechelse Heide is undoubtedly one of the highlights of a visit to Maasmechelen. Did you know that this is also home to the highest natural walking trail in the Hoge Kempen National Park? At approximately 104 metres above sea level, you can enjoy stunning views over the surrounding green landscape.

Dogs are welcome too. Choose a route that passes one of the two off-leash dog areas. Within these zones, your dog may roam freely without a lead. Once you leave the designated area, dogs must be put back on a leash.

Kids

Is the Mechelse Heide kid-friendly? Absolutely!

There is plenty to discover for young adventurers. Turn the youngest members of the family into real nature rangers with the National Park Kids Safari. Or let them climb, jump and explore their way through the Beestige Boelbos, where they can learn about the animals that live in our natural environment.

A walk through the Mechelse Heide becomes an unforgettable adventure for the whole family.
